A successful Hillary Term

For the first time, we sang for the feast day of St Hillary, the saint after whom Hillary Term is named: the 'Athanasius of the West'. We accompanied a beautiful and well-attended Dominican High Mass in Blackfriars.

A less fortunate 'first' was the cancellation of the Mass of the Purification of Our Lady -- Candlemas -- due to the illness of the celebrant. The schola has sung at this feastday in his church for a decade! Happily Fr Saward has made a complete recovery.

Hillary Term sees the Schola's longest regular trip outside Oxford, to Our Lady and St Anne, Caversham, the official Marian Shrine of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The Latin Mass Society's annual pilgrimage takes place on the Ember Saturday of Lent, an unusual service with five extra readings, and we were joined by the Newman Consort who sang a polyphonic Mass Ordinary and two motets. Mass was followed by a rather splendid lunch at Bel and the Dragon for singers, servers, and sacred ministers.
